It’s fall, y’all, and Cape Girardeau is at its best right now. Crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and the bluffs along the Mississippi lit up in red and gold. The color does not last long, so here is where to catch it before the leaves let go.
When to Catch Peak Color
In Southeast Missouri, fall color builds through October and usually peaks in the last week of the month into early November. Color moves from north to south across the state, so our corner tends to turn a little later than St. Louis or Columbia. If you want to time your trip, the Missouri Department of Conservation posts a weekly fall color report all season long.
Trail of Tears State Park
About ten miles north of town, Trail of Tears State Park sits right on the Mississippi River, and its overlook is the payoff. From the boardwalk, you look out over the water with limestone bluffs rising as high as 300 feet and forest rolling down to the river in every shade of orange, red, and gold.
The park has more than 14 miles of trails for every kind of hiker. The Sheppard Point Trail is a two-mile loop that climbs to a bluff-top view, while the 10-mile Peewah Trail winds into the park’s most remote, wooded stretches. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, wild turkey, and white-tailed deer along the way. Admission is free, like all Missouri state parks, and the visitor center is worth a stop to learn the history behind the park’s name.
Cape Rock Park
Just north of downtown, Cape Rock Park sits on the bluff where Cape Girardeau got its start, and the winding drive out East Cape Rock Drive is half the appeal. The road curves through tall trees before opening up at the overlook, where you can look out over the Mississippi and across to the tree line of Southern Illinois. It is one of the best river views in town, easy enough to catch right from your car, though it is worth stepping out for a photo. Cape Rock Drive itself is one of the prettiest stretches to drive this time of year.
Dennis Scivally Park
Continuing along Cape Rock Drive, Dennis Scivally Park is a small neighborhood park that turns into a quiet gem in the fall. Tall shade trees canopy the grounds, and a stately stone bridge crosses Walker Branch Creek, which makes for a picture-perfect backdrop once the leaves change. Plenty of Cape families have taken their dance and senior photos on that bridge. Pack a picnic, take a slow walk, and enjoy the color close to home.
Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center
Tucked into North County Park off Highway 61, the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is one of the easiest places in town to get a dose of fall color. The two-mile White Oak Trace winds through oak-hickory forest, sinkholes, deep hollows, and rolling river hills, so the canopy overhead really shows off this time of year.
If you are bringing little ones or want a gentler walk, the quarter-mile Ridgetop Trail is paved and accessible. Grab a Discovery Backpack inside, keep your camera ready for wildlife, and take your time. The trails are open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m., and admission is free.
Capaha Park
You do not have to leave the city limits for a good leaf-peeping walk. Capaha Park, Cape’s oldest park near the SEMO campus, wraps a walking path around its lagoon under a canopy of mature shade trees that turn beautifully in the fall. It is flat, easy, and right in the middle of everything, which makes it a favorite for a quick morning stroll or an afternoon with the family. Circle the pond, say hello to the ducks, and enjoy the color without the drive.
Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail
If you want to stretch your legs while you take in the color, the Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail is the way to do it. The paved trail runs through the middle of Cape, following Cape LaCroix Creek and connecting Shawnee Park, Arena Park, and Osage Park, with plenty of spots to hop on and park along the way. Walk it, run it, or bike it under the changing trees. It is flat, easy, and open to everyone.
Downtown Cape Girardeau Riverfront
You do not need the woods to enjoy fall. Head downtown to the riverfront and take in the Mississippi, with the tree line along the banks and the Illinois shore turning gold and amber across the water. Walk the riverfront, watch a barge roll by, then warm up with a seasonal drink from Red Banner Coffee Roasters, just up the block at the corner of Spanish and Independence. Coffee, river views, and fall air are a hard combination to beat.
Cape’s fall season is short but stunning, whether you are driving out to a river overlook, walking a trail under the changing trees, or strolling the riverfront with a coffee in hand. Get out and enjoy it before the leaves fall and the season turns.
