Outdoors & Trails
Cape sits right on the Mississippi River, and the trail system gives you everything from an easy paved loop to a real workout in the woods.
The Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail runs 5.67 miles of paved, multi-use path through the city. It’s the go-to for walking, running, rollerblading, and road biking, and it’s accessible for almost any fitness level.
For something quieter, Cape Woods Conservation Area offers a 36.7-acre bottomland forest with a hiking trail that crosses Cape LaCroix Creek. It connects to the broader trail system so that you can string together a longer route or just take a quick nature break.
Klaus Park Trail is a 3.2-mile loop with real elevation. Local trail runners and mountain bikers love it for the hills and winding paths.
And just a short drive north of town, Trail of Tears State Park offers some of the best wooded hiking in the area. The Lake Trail is a 2.25-mile loop around Lake Boutin. Maple Hollow Trail is a 1-mile wooded loop with a flowing stream and unique rock formations, perfect for a slow morning walk.
Closer in, Capaha Park and the riverfront are great for an evening stroll. The riverfront’s new shaded areas give you a place to sit and watch the barges roll past.
Food & Drink
Patios fill up in Cape Girardeau the minute the weather turns nice. Cold drinks, slow brunches, and ice cream within walking distance of the river are all part of the summer rhythm.
For frozen treats, Ty’s Summer Sno is a Cape summer rite of passage. They have the classic flavors, plus sugar-free and dye-free options, so the whole family can find something to love. Down by the water, Port Cape Girardeau at 19 N. Water Street runs a walk-up ice cream window with 16 hand-dipped flavors.
Beyond ice cream, Cape’s food and drink scene also leans into summer flavors and vibes. Breweries pour something cold and crisp, wine bars host summer wine tastings, and weekends turn into a slow rotation of brunch, lunch, and late dinners on the patio.

Live Music
Cape Girardeau sits along Highway 61, the legendary Blues Highway, and our live music scene proves it.
Scout Hall has events going all summer long. If you can catch one at their outdoor venue, it’s worth the trip. On July 25, they’re hosting a free concert – your chance to see what Scout Hall is all about. Doors open at 6 pm, music starts at 7 pm, and a cash bar is available.

Discovery Playhouse is a hands-on children’s museum that’s a longtime Cape staple for families with little ones, with new exhibits coming all the time. Creative Ewe lets kids (and adults) pick out a piece of pottery and paint it themselves, perfect for a rainy afternoon or just a slower, screen-free day. The Pickleball Factory is a great spot for active families to play together, whether you’re new to the sport or already hooked. And Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center is the local water park, complete with slides, a lazy river, a splash pad, and plenty of space to spread out.
Add in the Capaha Park splash pad, the Wheel Park by the A. C. Brase Arena Building, and playgrounds scattered across town, and you have a full season of options without ever leaving the city limits.

- Walking the riverfront is one of the best ways to spend a summer evening, especially now that the new shaded areas offer a place to sit and relax.
